Brother Stamford Raffles<\/strong><\/p>\n Member of:<\/p>\n Lodge Virtutis et Artis Amici, in Buitenzorg, Java, under the Grand Orient of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n British statesman, Lieutenant-Governor of British Java (1811\u20131815) and Governor-General of Bencoolen (1817\u20131822), best known for his founding of Singapore. He was also heavily involved in the conquest of the Indonesian island of Ja<\/a>va<\/a> from Dutch and French military forces during the Napoleonic Wars and contributed to the expansion of the British Empire.
